We want to tell stories that promote a devotion and reverence for truth, goodness, and beauty. We want to promote a love for God, home, family, and earth through digital media.

Why “pietas?”

Pietas is the Roman virtue of devotion and reverence to religion, homeland, and family. It features heavily in Virgil’s epic The Aeneid, in which the protagonist Aeneas must continually choose to devote himself to a mission that is larger than himself.

This Roman virtue was adopted and enriched by the church to describe the attitude under which the virtues are ordered. Ambrose, Augustine, and Aquinas each saw pietas as the fundamental orientation of the soul to God, family, and home that directs and grounds virtue.

Why the Pelican?

When choosing a logo, it was important for us to choose a symbol that communicated our mission effectively.

We settled on the storied symbol of the Pelican in her Piety. This symbol has a rich tradition in western civilization. Tradition held that the pelican was the most devoted mother in the natural world, wounding her own breast to feed her offspring.

This compelling symbol perfectly carries the theme of pietas. It symbolizes a self-sacrificial commitment to the duties we have to God, family, and home.

It captures the mission of Pietas Media and every institution that seeks to steward well our inheritance to pass it on to our children.
